Courses

Queens University Belfast is presenting three ‘Shiatsu Health’ courses January - March 2009.

'Introduction to Shiatsu'
3 half day sessions on Saturday mornings 21, 28 Feb and 7 Mar 2009, 10.00am to 1.00pm. Cost £33.

An opportunity to learn a new skill which can improve your own health and that of your family and friends.

You will be shown how to give a simple, effective Shiatsu treatment using a variety of positions including lying and sitting. You will also learn the location and uses of some of the major energy points on the body which can help alleviate certain ailments and complaints.

At the start of each session we will do some simple meditation and Qi Gong (stretching) exercises to improve our own energy and well-being.
Please wear loose, comfortable clothing and bring a mat or blanket to work on.

'Do-In It Yourself: A Self Help Health Programme'
10  weekly sessions on Thursdays from 6.00 to 7.00pm starting 29 Jan 2009. Cost £36, £22 concessions.

Do-In (pronounced dough – in) is an ancient healing practice which includes meditation, breathing techniques, meridian stretches, self massage and acupressure techniques.

An ancient Japanese medical text claims that Do-in exercises are “effective in expelling various ill Ki (energy) and re-instating healthy Ki.”
In another Eastern classic Do-In  is described as “a method practised by ascetics and Taoists of old that enables a person to stay young and strong, develop supernatural powers and attain eternal youth. By practising this every day without fail a person can live to be more than a thousand years old and exist side-by-side with wizards.”

I can’t promise eternal youth or co-existence with wizards but I can offer a weekly oasis where you can rejuvenate your energy and rekindle a feeling of well–being by following a regular practice of Do-In exercises.

Meditation calms and relaxes both mind and body.  It helps you achieve a sense of grounding and puts you in touch with your body.  This allows you to notice more quickly when things are out of balance and  provides you with the opportunity to make the changes necessary to re-create rebalance.

Meridian exercises. Meridians are the network of pathways in the body which carry our vital energy or Ki to all our cells.  For good health it is important that these pathways are kept open so that our Ki can flow properly.  These stretches and exercises help to unblock any meridians where the Ki has become blocked and strengthen areas where the energy is weaker.

Self  massage and acupressure.  Self applied massage and acupressure techniques are an excellent way to release areas of tension and tightness in the muscles and blockages in the energy meridians.  This helps to improve the circulation into the muscles, remove build-up of lactic acid and improve the flow of Ki in the body.

Breathing    The breath is a vital way of bringing energy into the body.  Unfortunately we often do not utilize our full breath  and realize our full potential.  Some simple breathing exercises can help us cleanse our respiratory system and bring fresh, energised  breath into our body.
Please wear loose comfortable clothing and bring a mat or blanket.

'The Theory of Chinese Medicine'
6 weekly sessions on Thursdays from 7.00 to 8.00pm starting 29 Jan 2009. Cost £23, £15 concessions.

Traditional Chinese Medicine is a fascinating topic for anyone interested in health and well-being. It is an ancient system of healing which has its origins in the philosophy and understanding of how nature and the universe function. It applies this understanding to the place of humans within the natural world and to how the human mind and body work in health and illness.

In these six short sessions we will look at the various concepts used in Chinese medicine to explain the inner workings of the human being. These concepts include Yin and Yang, The Five Elements, Chi, the meridians and organs and the causes of disease.

Please bring pen and paper.

Paul Lundberg's 'The New Book of Shiatsu' continues to be the UK's best selling introductory shiatsu book. It is an excellent book for anyone who wants to learn the basics. For those with some experience it serves as a useful reference.

If money is tight 'The Shiatsu Workbook: A Beginners Guide' by Nigel Dawes is a straight forward introduction to shiatsu. It describes and illustrates (good photos) a variety of basic techniques.
